The European Parliament approved EMFF amendments to mitigate the impact of coronavirus outbreak on the aquaculture and fisheries sector.

The exceptional temporary measures of the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative Plus include support for:

☑️ temporary cessation of fishing activities

☑️ storage of fishery & aquaculture products

☑️ financial compensations to the aquaculture & processing industry

☑️ specific measures for the outermost regions

Additional amendments to the EMFF Regulation allow for more flexible reallocation of financial resources within the operational programmes of each Member State and a simplified procedure for amending operational programmes with respect to the introduction of the new measures. Operations supported under the temporary coronavirus-related measures will be retroactively eligible as of 1 February 2020 until 31 December 2020. Therefore, Member States can already start selecting and supporting these operations.

overview and updates, which included all the past field campaigns like those that happened last summer.

The day closed with a discussion on the technical implementation, having updates on the satellite data acquisition, the algorithm implementation and the connection to in situ measurements. The day was closed with a consortium dinner at the Centrál Kávéház, one of the most traditional coffeehouses in Budapest, opened in 1887, that was an important intellectual centre of various Hungarian literature and scientific streams throughout the 19th and 20th century.

Day 2

The second day started with an overview of our demonstration cases, followed by updates on our communication and dissemination plans, including the business & marketing plan.

As a highlight from this session is the recently published white paper we created with EOMORES project on "Satellite-assisted monitoring of water quality to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive".
The evening ended by gladly receiving our project officer Sally Taylor and one of our reviewers, Jean Marie Beckers, for a dinner and wine tasting gathering.

Day 3 - Review Meeting

The whole day was about providing to our reviewers Tarek Habib and Jean Marie Beckers, as well as our project officer, Sally Taylor, all the updates of the project from all this year. We are very proud of what we have achieved this year, and we were very grateful for all the feedback we got from them.
Mussel farming in the Netherlands

The fourth campaign on this summer was at Waddenzee and Eems estuary, a highly dynamic and productive estuarine area, characterised by extensive tidal mudflats, saltmarshes, and deeper tidal creeks. It‘s also one of the largest coastal wetlands in the world and a biodiversity hotspot.

Pressures such as eutrophication increased sedimentation due to dredging, sea-level rise, invasive species are causing ecosystem changes. CoastObs objective in this case study, is to gain insight in spatial and temporal variation in food availability for mussels monitor turbidity as a result of dredging fisheries and sand nourishment monitor environmental status of the coastal waters, including eutrophication, PP, indicator species phaeocystis, and to provide data for reporting requirements.

Our work in this area will help users interested in ecological status and trends in water quality, historic analysis service to monitor the sources, magnitude and consequences of eutrophication.

Macrophytes and submerged seagrass beds in Bourgneuf Bay, France.

The fifth fieldwork campaign was carried out in a macrotidal bay (tidal range 6m) located in the coast of France. The intertidal zone (~ 100 km2) is mostly constituted of mudflats and rocky areas, widely used for shellfish aquaculture (oyster farms). Large wild oyster reefs are found in the eastern part of the bay. The intertidal zone also presents benthic microalgae (BMA), macroalgae, and seagrass (mostly Zostera noltei).

CoastObs aim at this area is to use Sentinel2 time-series to update decadal trend analysis and retrieve Water Framework Directive variables (total extent, biomass) and to help aquaculture management of wild oyster reefs.

Coming next

From all the five fieldwork campaigns carried out this summer, we will create the series of "Success stories", short clips intended to give you all the insights on the work done in each area. So wait for Spring 2020 to start watching those!

Mussel farming in Spain

In Galicia, Spain, mussel farming is a tradition that dates back to the late 1940's when raft culture was introduced. The Rias Bajas on the Galician coast of NW Spain are among the most productive oceanic regions of the world and thus, mussel farming is a key industry in the region (1).

Being Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) a key factor in limiting aquaculture development, and further, having well-known links with intoxications associated with shellfish consumption (2), CoastObs aims for the Galician case study, to help the local mussel industry by providing useful information on the prediction of bloom occurrence of HABs (Pseudo-nitzschia spp.) through the use of Earth Observation.

The fieldwork for validating sentinel data included radiometric measurements and water sampling for phytoplankton size classes documentation.

Seagrass and macro-algae beds in France

Another fieldwork campaign this summer was carried out at Glénan Archipelago in South Brittany, France. In between the islands, in the enclosed and shallow lagoon, the seabed consists mainly of Zostera marina seagrass beds, macro-algae, and sand patches.

In this case study, CoastObs attempts to gain insight in the spatial and temporal variation of intertidal macrophytes (seagrass beds and macro-algae) and submerged seagrass beds; to develop an optical non-destructive method to estimate intertidal seagrass leaf biomass and epiphytes with a field spectroradiometer.

The fieldwork included radiometric measurements and video recording of the seafloor to validate sentinel images.

Eutrophication in Italy

The third campaign was carried out in Venice Lagoon, Italy, an area characterized for its very shallow coastal environment with a mean depth of 1 m, and connected with the sea through three inlets. Given its characteristics, it is influenced by freshwater from the land and tides of the NAS, so a succession of different environments from the mainland to the sea characterizes the complex morphology of the lagoon: shallows, mudflats, wetlands, sandbars, islands and a dense network of channels.

Despite being normal for this type of lagoon to have a constantly evolving environment, the problems that undermine the balance of the lagoon's ecosystem today are changes brought by man and triggered by nature, such as erosion of the morphological structures of the lagoon and pollution.

CoastObs aim in this case study is to gain insight in spatial and temporal variation of submerged macrophytes (seagrass beds and macro-algae) and their correlation to eutrophication and anoxic crises in the Lagoon of Venice; and will further investigate the morphodynamics, coastal erosion and accretion patterns in dynamic key areas, based on suspended sediment transport-dispersion pathways.

For this, the fieldwork campaign included radiometric measurements and data collection for TSM, turbidity an water temperature of the water column.

Upcoming campaigns

In August and September, there will be two campaigns left, water quality in the Waddenzee and Eems estuary in the Netherlands, and the second part of seagrass and macro-algae beds with a case study in Bourgneuf Bay, South Brittany, France.

With a blue sky and a wonderful weather, the University of Vigo hosted us for our progress overview and our planning for the next 6 months. The discussions included all the fieldwork planning happening this summer (we are so excited about this!) as well as our interactions with users, upcoming scientific publications, feedback for a white paper and updates on our business plan.

The meeting included as well a consortium-fieldtrip to the mussel farming rafts in Vigo, where one of our case studies is being carried out.

We thank UVigo for organizing such wonderful meeting and we look forward to meeting everyone again in November in Budapest!
