In the past 4 years, we have been working on developing a user-relevant platform that offers validated information products based on satellite remote sensing.
What does this mean?
It means that we now offer solutions for monitoring coastal waters with parameters such as turbidity, eutrophication, the abundance of seagrass and macroalgae, phytoplankton size classes, primary production, and the presence of harmful algae.
How does this help?
These parameters help to give useful information for many different sectors. For example, we can monitor turbidity as a result of dredging activities, or we can determine the food availability in a specific region, and therefore help determine the optimal location for a shellfish aquaculture farm. We can also detect and monitor harmful algal blooms, to support the design of strategies to mitigate their impacts.
Where can I know more?
If you want to know about how we transform satellite data into meaningful information services, or if you want to check out more examples of the different applications these parameters can have in different sectors, then we invite you to check out our e-training platform, a very cool and interactive tool that will explain you all the ABC behind, and how to use our CoastObs portal to access all our products.
What's next for CoastObs?
Now the project officially ended, the CoastObs consortium has reincarnated as a commercial product and service provider for coastal water monitoring.
The number of different services developed to fulfill different user needs for water quality data, are now delivered in such formats that they fit seamlessly into the users’ own data management and information systems. Possibilities include: access via the CoastObs web portal, provision of .geotif, .netCDF or shape files via e.g. ftp or email, or a pdf report.
What products and services you will offer?
For this, we have prepared a portfolio where you can check all our basic, innovative, and high-level products, as well as our service types. You can check it out by clicking on the image below.
